Directions for Leading Math Discussion - UPDATED from the original instructions provided on the Assignment sheet

Prepare for your assigned discussion role: content leader, pedagogy leader, word wizard, or questioner. Submit a document or provide a link to or embed the Web 2.0 tool that you prepared for class to the associated WIKI page by the evening before.

During class we will first spend a few minutes discussing in small groups what people wrote in their learning logs. Then each leader will take turns completing their role. If the class already discussed specific details that you have included as part of your preparation then skip that information and focus on other material. Each person should spend no more than 5 minutes in their leadership role.

By 8:00 PM on the day following your discussion, you will complete a self-evaluation found on the WIKI on the page labeled, "Discussion Leader Assessment".

Class Discussion Leader Roles

A.Content Leader

- Discusses the actual math content presented in the chapter.

- Be prepared by creating a concept map summary of the math content of the chapter using Inspiration or Kidspiration or an online Web 2.0 graphic organizer tool, such as https://bubbl.us/; http://www.mindomo.com/; http://mind42.com/; http://www.glinkr.net/; http://www.spicynodes.org;
http://popplet.com/ to help lead/guide the discussion.

B.Pedagogy Leader

- Discusses the teaching practices recommended in the text for the topic including how students have been shown to learn the content developmentally. Be prepared to lead a discussion on how these recommendations align with current practices in schools or with how you and the class remember math was taught while in school.

- Be prepared with a bulleted list of recommended teaching practices and developmental progression of the content for students

C.Word Wizard

- Focus on the vocabulary words. Be ready to discuss new terms, their meanings, their relevance to students/teachers, etc.

- Have each word written in a format that everyone will be able to see and use. Consider using a handout for each person or something that can be displayed to the whole class such as: a Word Splash (Wordle or Tagxedo), Quizlet cards (online Web 2.0 tool), card sorts (make one set per table), a word puzzle (such as a crossword puzzle or word search – can be created online at http://www.discoveryeducation.com/free-puzzlemaker/?CFID=13812510&CFTOKEN=69924868

D.The Questioner

- What questions do you have about the out-of-class reading? Focus on areas that cause you to “Pause and Reflect” to discuss.

Additionally, review Bloom’s taxonomy guide for asking questions and provide a list of questions that you could use in a math class for your chapter, at least one question per taxonomy level. Refer to http://www.is93.org/blooms_math.htm for math ideas. Share and discuss these questions with the class.
