I thought this was a really fun chapter, and tried to make my lessons interactive with use of objects we use everyday. I tried to be really prepared, and practiced my lessons many times with my son and nephew. I think my lesson went pretty well. I was a little nervous in the beginning, but it seemed to get easier as the lesson went on. I think my activities went well and everyone cooperated well together. I know it was a little confusing with the measuring objects activity, but it went well. I did see a few things I could change about that certain activity. I really liked the book I used, and it is a very good book for introducing measurement. Overall I feel okay with my lesson. I do need to speak louder, that would help with giving instruction and managing the classroom. Thank You all for being such good students.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"44780916","body":"Your lesson was very helpful and fun. I enjoyed the measuring lesson using the tape. My favorite activity that you shared with us came from the scale and bear measurement activity! This was great and kids would love getting to physically manipulate the weight of bears on each side to balance the scales. I also liked the activity where we measured the lines on the floor to see the different sizes. Again, this would be great for kids because it would allow them to see how different shapes\/formations can give results of different measures.
\nAlso, I really liked the book you chose "Inchworm and a Half" as well as the first manipulative you used, which let students pick which measurement was most accurate (feet or yards... etc.)

Everything was well prepared, interactive, and went very smooth. You seemed like such a natural up in front of the class. I LOVED your literature book, "Inchworm and a Half", it was very cute and simplified such an important concept for young ones. I want it for myself!! :) I don't think I realized how often we used measurement in our everyday lives, so I loved how you asked us to write some examples down. I liked comparing the bears with the scales, and Dr. Suters pointed out we were doing algebra with those at our table, and I thought what a great and creative way to teach students algebra along with measurement! I had a little confusion on the area of triangles but I do believe it was an oversight on my part. However, my first few lessons ran smoothly. I was happy to have good volunteers to work with on the AM\/PM lesson. Using a graph was helpful to make the distinction between the concepts of AM\/PM. My next lesson covering the clock faces was effective I thought. I did forget to mention the fact the minute hand would be at the quarter or half etc. After my clarifications I was on track with my information my lesson worked out for the best. The virtual manipulative websites peaked an interest with everyone and I plan to use those tools in a real teaching experience. Students seem to relate more strongly to visual types of instruction, as I observed using virtual tools.
\nImprovements in my lesson would include providing a clear communication to my class. I failed to prepare a note card for reference something I usually do to guide my expectations of the class. In future plans I will always include a note card. Another area I had not expected to encounter was my need for a mini review of my concepts could have contributed to a more efficient lesson. This demo lesson was a learning experience which has helped me grow toward becoming a better teacher.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"44747214","body":"Wendy I think that you did a wonderful job today! First and foremost, I really liked the book you chose, "A Second is a Hiccup." This book was really great to explain the concept of time, which can be extremely difficult for kids to understand. My two favorite activities were the AM\/PM sticker chart and the Magazine Article measurement activities. The sticker chart was great for kids to get involved in, and could even be turned into a whole class activity. As for the magazine article, this was great to apply measurement to real world concepts.

My favorite part was the clock activity. I don't recall ever learning to guess time by the hour hand, but it is very necessary and helpful. I know with my own kids, it's sometimes hard to get that the hour hand might appear to be on the 10 hour, but in reality if you look at the minute, it's only a little before the hour.
